Mr. Big is our most recent addition. He's 16 years old, stands at over 18.5 hands high and is nearly 2200 pounds. Geronimo was owned by the Amish and has spent the majority of his life pulling farm equipment, wagons and buggies. He was sold at auction to a feed lot after he was done serving his purpose. Learn more about his story & journey to recovery under the, "Project Geronimo" section of our website.
Pickles is a character and a half. He is a little stand offish to new people, but if you have a cookie, he will be your bestest friend! He is a bit on the wild side. It's likely he was sold at auction due to his, "Bucking bronco" behavior. We're unsure if Pickles will ever be suitable for riding, but we make a little progress everyday. Either way he has a forever home here at FLM.
My Name is Jax, my Mom tells me I'm the sweetest boy ever. I was rescued a little over 2 years ago. My Previous owner hit me in the head, right between my eyes with a hammer. You'd never guess I endured such trauma unless you looked under my forelock.
We don't know Jax's entire story, we just know he was neglected and abused. There was an elderly couple that offered to help his previous owner by letting him stay at their place. They were shocked when they came home one day to find him with his head split open by a hammer. The person who no longer wanted Jax, hit him in the head because he would not get in the trailer.
The elderly couple had no horse knowledge, but did their best to help him. This was in 2017, at the time Jax was a young stallion. He had been at their property for ten months. They kept him well fed and they did their very best, but they knew nothing about horses and were in over their heads with a stallion.
The couple contacted Oakdale Equine Rescue who took Jax in and had him gelded. They rehabilitated him and had him trained. In 2018 Jackie adopted Jax from Oakdale Equine Rescue. Jax was the first addition and start of Fur Lives Matter. Today, Jax jumps right into the trailer without a problem. He's truly a pleasure to ride & a total love bug.
Bear is his name because he's soft & furry just like a teddy bear. One of the kindest souls we have on the ranch! Bear was sold at auction to a kill buyer and feed lot, out of Bowie, TX. He was a Rancher's horse and believed to be about 17 years of age. Bear struggles with chronic discomfort in his hoofs because his feet were not properly cared for. We're constantly battling thrush infections and cracking/softening of the heel bulbs. Despite these struggles, Bear is a happy camper and we spoil him with love every day!
HI! I'm Trix, a 16 hand gelding about 6 years old. I was rescued by Oakdale Equine Rescue, adopted, then returned a year later. About a year later, my forever Mom (Jackie) rescued me again and says I will spend the rest of my life filled with love and attention. That is a very good thing for me, because I LOVE & DEMAND lots of it! Treats and humans of every kind are my favorite. Mom says I'm a social butterfly and love being up in any business that isn't mine!
Dix is a Standard bred, off the track racehorse believed to be appx 15-16 years of age. He was abandoned at Denio's in Roseville, CA, the day a local horse auction was taking place. It was reported someone backed a trailer up, unloaded him then drove off. After the auction all the other horses were picked up, except Dixon. He was standing alone, extremely underweight, with stickers (Auction stickers, probably to hide the fact he wasn't supposed to be there) in his mane and forelock with noticeable recent, "Pin firing" wounds on his legs.
Pin firing is the treatment of an injury to a horse's leg, by burning, freezing, or dousing it with acid or caustic chemicals. The thought was this process would induce a counter-irritation and speed and/or improve healing. This, “Treatment” is often used on racehorses. The theory was that it would "toughen" the leg of the horse. This treatment is prevalent in equine veterinary books published in the early 20th century; however, many present-day veterinarians and horse owners consider it barbaric and a cruel form of treatment.
Dixon like most racehorses has a tattoo on the inside of his upper lip. The tattoo links the horse to the registration papers and owner. Unfortunately, his tattoo had been altered so it was impossible to link him to his registration papers or owner. Dixon is the most sound and stable horse we have at the rescue. He’s the type of horse anyone of any age can ride. Dix has a top dog alpha attitude and the other boys in the pasture know who the Boss is, LOL!
Doc is a flashy & handsome stud pony with a personality to match. We look forward to having him gelded in the month to come.
They call me Tink around here. I'm very shy, but I LOVE COOKIES. I was sold at auction to a kill buyer feed lot in Texas. When I arrived home, I was very thin, sick and had almost no mane and tail. I don't like to be handled by humans much, but every day I start to trust a little more. Mom tells me I'm due to have a baby in the next couple of months.
Pixie is our beautiful white unicorn. She is a little on the nervous side and still getting use to the idea of human contact. Everyday we make progress little by little.
Chito is a Wild Burro rescued from the BLM, he's estimated to be about 4 years of age. Chito is cautious, but VERY inquisitive. We rescued Chito because Brownie was very depressed after her sister died. We needed to find her another donkey to bond with as quickly as possible. Chito is like Brownie's annoying little brother, but he's attached to her at the hip and refuses to leave her side. He keeps us laughing with his goofy personality and wild antics.
Brownie came to us with her sister Cookie out of a feed lot located in Texas. Shortly after arrival, Brownie's little sister died due to numerous complications from the conditions she came from. This left Brownie alone and depressed... until her new little Brother Chito arrived.
Brownie's as pretty as she is sweet. She loves attention and will follow you all over the pasture begging for love and scratches.
